Essaouira is situated on the Atlantic coast and is known as the windy city. The coastal wind is called alizee by the Moroccans.

Essaouira, pronounced esa-wera, means well designed. The city is walled by stone ramparts and turrets and was seen in the film Othello made by Orson Wells. Today a square in the seafront is named Place Orson Welles. The walled town is split into the mellah, medina and kasbah laid out in a simple grid system. Wander throught the enticing markets and buy beautiful rugs, ceramics, jewellery and leather ware.
From Essaouira beach it is possible to view the Eleanora falcons which travel annually from Madagascar to breed in the Purple Islands off the coast. Essaouria is a pleasant seaside resort and one of the most attractive cities in Morocco. Numerous exciting bazaars sell stunning berber rugs and handicrafts. You will enjoy the experience of shopping or simply browsing and soaking up the atmosphere of the market place
Visit the Skala de la Ville the impressive sea bastion built along the cliffs of Essaouira. The walkway has wonderful views out to sea and is a popular place to view the setting sun. Enjoy the tasty Moroccan cuisine including fresh seafood. Experience a relaxing coffee or a refreshing Moroccan mint tea al fresco over looking the Atlantic Ocean.
